Worship Preparation – Sunday, October 14, 2012

1. Ways to use this worship preparation:

Print it out Friday and place it in your bible for the weekend
Use it as a family devotion and time of prayer on Saturday evening.

2. Read sermon text: Nahum (ESV). We will study the entire book.

3. Read sermon summary:
When you read through the book of Nahum for the first time you are inclined to the think that the book is all about judgment. God’s wrath against the city of Nineveh is what fills the pages of this small book, but a more careful reading will present another side of the story. The book wasn’t written to Nineveh, it was written to Judah. Judah is being pressed on every side by the powerful Assyrians, and their defeat at the hands of this powerful nation, whose capitol was Nineveh, seems immanent. That is unless, of course, God intervenes. Nahum’s name means comfort, and that is exactly what his letter provides for God’s people. They will be delivered from their enemies by the powerful hand of God. This deliverance is clearly expressed in chapter 1 verse 15, which reads, “Behold, upon the mountains, the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace!”

4. Consider the songs and their relationship to the sermon:

Mighty To Save

Everyone needs compassion,
Love that's never failing,
Let mercy fall on me
Everyone needs forgiveness,
Kindness of the Savior
The Hope of nations

Savior, He can move the mountain,
My God is mighty to save,
He is mighty to save
Forever author of Salvation,
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave

So take me as you find me
All my fears and failures
Fill my life again
I give my life to follow
Everything I believe in
Now I surrender

Shine your light and let the whole world see
Singing, for the glory of the risen King
Jesus, Shine your light and let the whole world see
Singing for the glory of the risen King

In Christ Alone

In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light my strength my song
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled when strivings cease!
My Comforter my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone! - who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This Gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied -
For every sin on Him was laid:
Here in the death of Christ I live

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine -
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till he returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand!
