Worship Preparation: September 16, 2012

Worship Preparation – Sunday, September 16, 2012

1. Ways to use this worship preparation:

Print it out Friday and place it in your bible for the weekend
Use it as a family devotion and time of prayer on Saturday evening.

2. Read sermon text: ESV – Amos. We will study all 9 chapters.

3. Read sermon summary:
Amos, basically, outlines in great detail the sin of the people. Amos gives short descriptions of the sins of Israel’s neighbors, and then, zeros in on Israel for about eight chapters. The point of this great detail is that God is revealing to us that he is a God who sees and weighs all things. His judgments will be exact, and this is meant to be a warning to the people. Again, he invites them to return to him, but it is clear they are rejecting his offer. The book is very dark until you get to the last five verses. There are other bright spots throughout, but they are rejected by the people. The last five verses point to a final restoration. It points to a rebuilding of the tent of David, which will be expanded. We know that is only fulfilled in the coming descendant of David, Jesus, who will rule forever at the right hand of God.

4. Consider the songs and their relationship to the sermon:

How Great Is Your Faithfulness

Now unto the King who reigns over all
And never changes or turns
Unfailing justice unfading grace
Whose promises remain
Yes Your promises remain

The heavens ring
The saints all sing
Great is Your faithfulness
From age to age we will proclaim
Great is Your faithfulness
How great is Your faithfulness

Everything changes but You stay the same
Your Word and kingdom endure
We lean on the promise of all that You are
And trust forevermore
We will trust forevermore

From generation to generation
You never failed us O God
Yesterday and today and tomorrow
Until the day You return

I Will Glory in My Redeemer

I will glory in my Redeemer
Whose priceless blood has ransomed me
Mine was the sin that drove the bitter nails
And hung Him on that judgment tree
I will glory in my Redeemer
Who crushed the power of sin and death
My only Savior before the Holy Judge
The Lamb Who is my righteousness
The Lamb Who is my righteousness

I will glory in my Redeemer
My life He bought, my love He owns
I have no longings for another
I’m satisfied in Him alone
I will glory in my Redeemer
His faithfulness my standing place
Though foes are mighty and rush upon me
My feet are firm, held by His grace
My feet are firm, held by His grace

I will glory in my Redeemer
Who carries me on eagle’s wings
He crowns my life with loving-kindness
His triumph song I’ll ever sing
I will glory in my Redeemer
Who waits for me at gates of gold
And when He calls me it will be paradise
His face forever to behold
His face forever to behold
His face forever to behold
