Worship Preparation: September 9, 2012

Worship Preparation – Sunday, September 9, 2012

1. Ways to use this worship preparation:

Print it out Friday and place it in your bible for the weekend
Use it as a family devotion and time of prayer on Saturday evening.

2. Read sermon text: ESV – Joel. We will study all 3 chapters.

3. Read sermon summary:
This week we will study the book of Joel. Joel is a clear warning of judgment, and call for repentance. Joel starts by talking about the plagues that the people are already experiencing, and he warns them that these temporary sufferings are only pointing to something much worse to come. Then, he calls for the to repent. He wants them to leave their sin and idolatry behind, and turn back to God, crying out to Him. Of course, this call for repentance is only possible because the blood of Christ will satisfy the just wrath of God that the people deserve, and that is still the only way that repentance is possible.

4. Consider the songs and their relationship to the sermon:

It Is Well

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ hath regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

It is well, It is well,
Praise the Lord, oh my soul,
It is well, it is well with my soul.

My sin - O the bliss of this glorious thought! -
My sin, not in part, but the whole,
Is nailed to His cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

And, Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll,
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

It is well, (It is well)
With my soul, (With my soul,)
It is well; it is well with my soul.

There is Love that came for us
Humbled to a sinner's cross
You broke my shame and sinfulness
You rose again victorious

Faithfulness none can deny
Through the storm and through the fire
There is truth that sets me free
Jesus Christ who lives in me

You are stronger You are stronger
Sin is broken You have saved me
It is written Christ is risen
Jesus You are Lord of all

No beginning and no end
You're my hope and my defense
You came to seek and save the lost
You paid it all upon the cross

So let Your Name be lifted higher
Be lifted higher
Be lifted higher
