Read the sermon text: Galatians 4:21-31

Read the sermon summary: What are God’s plans for the future of ethnic Israel? Some may be wondering things like this with all the turmoil in the world, thinking the end might be near. Although this passage doesn’t speak directly to this question, it might lead us to conclude this is the wrong question. As we have seen thus far in Galatians, Paul isn’t making up something new in justification by faith. He argued earlier in the letter that this doctrine is present all the way back in Genesis, in the promise of God to Abraham and Abraham’s response of faith. Here too, Paul refers to Scripture to demonstrate the contrast between those of the law and those of the promise. Allegorically speaking, the Jewish people of Paul’s day were not children of Abraham and Sara, but of Hagar. They were not children of the promise. Indeed, all who put their hopes in the law are in slavery with her. In a stunning passage, Paul proclaims that Gentiles who come to God through faith in Christ aren’t second-class citizens in the kingdom of God. Nor are they inferior members of the family of God. Rather, anyone, Jew or Gentile, who has faith in Jesus Christ is a legitimate child of God, a child of the heavenly Jerusalem, a child of the promise.

Read the following song lyrics in relation to the sermon:

By Faith
By faith we see the hand of God
In the light of creation's grand design
In the lives of those who prove His faithfulness
Who walk by faith and not by sight

By faith our fathers roamed the earth
With the pow'r of His promise in their hearts
Of a holy city built by God's own hand
A place where peace and justice reign

Chorus
We will stand as children of the promise
We will fix our eyes on Him our soul's reward
Till the race is finished and the work is done
We'll walk by faith and not by sight

By faith the prophets saw a day
When the longed-for Messiah would appear
With the pow'r to break the chains of sin and death
And rise triumphant from the grave

By faith the church was called to go
In the pow'r of the Spirit to the lost
To deliver captives and to preach good news
In ev'ry corner of the earth

By faith the mountain shall be moved
And the pow'r of the gospel shall prevail
For we know in Christ all things are possible
For all who call upon His name
